We are delighted to announce The Journey to Tunisia 2025, a milestone event that celebrates the historic journey of Paul Klee, August Macke, and Louis Moilliet to Tunisia in April 1914. This journey had a profound impact on art history, profoundly influencing the transition to modern and abstract art.
110 years ago, Klee and Macke were awed by the vibrant colors, shapes, and light of Tunisia, rediscovering artistic values that would revolutionize their work. This journey is often considered a turning point in the evolution of German Expressionism towards abstraction, particularly for Klee, whose later works reflect this inspiration.
In 2025, we will come together to retrace the steps of this artistic odyssey. Coordinated by Tunisian journalist Noureddine Ben Redjeb and a group of German painters, this event promises to bring the transformative experience of Klee and his companions back to life.
The stages of the journey:
Knais
Kairouan
Tunis
Sidi Bou Said
Hammamet
Each of these destinations will host workshops, exhibitions and discussions, highlighting Klee’s legacy while celebrating the cultural exchange between Germany and Tunisia.
